3D Printing
Bringing ideas to life9:45AM – 11:45AM
Room: Boardroom 2, Nittany Lion Inn
The Activity
The session will begin with brief instructions on using 3D modeling software TinkerCad. The participants will then diverge into groups. Each table will be provided a preprinted object as well as an assortment of items. The challenge presented to the team is to try and redesign the printed object to perform better than the original (we can’t tell you what it is or that would spoil the fun). The final 30 minutes will be spent on each team explaining and defending their design. All the 3D models will then be set to print during the remainder of the day and will be tested in a live demonstration during the MAKEiT wrap-up session to determine which team’s design is the most successful.
What is it?
3D printing has changed the way ideas are rapidly brought to life in nearly every field of science, technology, medicine, art and design. The accessibility and relative affordability of 3D printing hardware and software has empowered makers from all over the world to materialize their visions without the expense and overhead of industrial facilities.
Our goal is to allow participants to experience what the iterative design process is like when using 3d modeling and printing to rapidly prototype a solution to a problem.
