Rapid Prototyping

Build it fast!

9:45AM – 11:45AM
Room: Faculty Staff Club, Nittany Lion Inn

What is it?

Rapid prototyping, as the term suggests, is the practice of quickly building a technological solution to some challenge so that the primary design concepts can be tested and iterated upon in as little time as possible.  Commercial applications of this practice are becoming more and more popular, and we’d like to introduce you to some fun and exciting ways to prototype solutions to your own challenges.

The Activity

An “Iron Chef” inspired activity using littleBits, LEGO, and other materials. Participants will split into six teams and will be given a prompt and problem to solve. Participants will have access to pads on easels and sharpies to sketch ideas, and can run to the bar to collect whatever materials they’ll need to prototype their solution. littleBits mentors will be available to answer questions about what certain bits can or cannot do to help speed up that process. The last 30 minutes or so will be devoted to describing/defending solution to other teams.

Our goal is to introduce participants to the concepts of rapid prototyping using simple electronics and other materials. From this exercise, we hope to help participants learn to include the concepts of rapid prototyping when considering solutions to an education problem/opportunity.
